Submission to HPCSA on Proposed Guideline Tariffs for Medical Practitioners and Dentists
The Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) would like to add its voice to the deliberations of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) regarding Guideline Tariffs for Medical Practitioners and Dentists.
As an independent civil society organisation with a mandate to promote liberal constitutional democracy and human rights, the HSF is well positioned to provide recommendations and insights.
The issue of tariff setting is important. Although the majority of South Africa’s population are served by the public healthcare system, a sizable number are served by the private healthcare system. The sustainability, affordability and efficiency of this system therefore form a vital part of the right of access to healthcare. The development of a fair process for tariff setting should play a vital role in the efficiency, management and administration of the private healthcare system.
