This was done by the President after he ignored advice from numerous quarters, including political allies and senior leaders in the African National Congress.  The effects of these replacements have included severe economic consequences.  It has resulted in widespread perception of bias, the downgrading of South Africa’s credit rating and shock to business and investment confidence in the country.  The HSF believes that the decision to reshuffle the Cabinet is unlawful on grounds of irrationality.

Deeply concerned about the state of our country and the rise and effect of corruption on particularly the poor, the HSF filed an application with the Constitutional Court in May 2017 asking for two primary remedies.  First, the HSF asked the Court to review and declare unlawful the President’s decision to dismiss Mr Pravin Gordhan and Mr Mcebisi Jonas as Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance. Second, the HSF asked the Court to direct the National Assembly to take specific steps including instituting an investigation into the allegations levelled against the President.  In August 2017, the HSF received notice from the Court that the matter will be considered after judgment of a similar case brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters has been handed down.
