
The Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) promotes constitutional democracy, rule of law and human rights. Our mission is to ensure that key institutions of constitutional democracy in South Africa are strengthened and protected so that they, domestically and internationally, deliver on the Constitution’s promise.
Researchers at HSF contribute to high-impact work in legal and policy research, advocacy, and public engagement. This is a dynamic role requiring both analytical depth and practical initiative.
HSF invites applications for the position of senior legal researcher.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth legal research and policy research and writing.
- Draft legal submissions, policy documents, and research reports.
- Undertake investigative work to support research and advocacy efforts.
- Develop and manage projects, including liaison and stakeholders.
- Drive advocacy initiatives to influence policy and legislation and support public campaigns.
- Contribute to media work, including writing opinion pieces and participating in interviews.
- Assist with fundraising activities and project reporting as needed.
Required Competencies and Skills
- A legal degree or postgraduate degree.
- 3-5 years of relevant experience.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
- Excellent writing, communication and presentation abilities.
- Strong organisational and computer literacy skills.
- Solid understanding of South Africa’s political and legal landscape.
