Ken Andrew

Ken Andrew was a Member of Parliament for 23 years.  He is a former chairman of Scopa, is currently chairman of a baby food company and serves as a trustee of a schools’ education trust.

Cecily Carmona

Cecily is a strategic advisor who has worked across industries predominantly in the field of strategy development and implementation, turn-around projects and operational improvement. She is a Director on the Board of the Foundation for a Safe South Africa, a non-executive director of Scaled Impact (a not for profit organization) and is a Fellow of the African Leadership Initiative and the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She is also mentor to entrepreneurs on the Endeavour Network.

Jane Evans

A pioneer in rural pre-school education in South Africa, Jane Evans established Ntataise, a non governmental organisation working in the field of early childhood development. She serves on the boards of a number of non profit organisations and sits on a provincial government advisory committee. For a number of years she managed a corporate social investment fund for a major South African company. She has received various awards for her work in education.

Paul Galatis

Paul Galatis is an entrepreneur who has, along with his two partners, spent the past eight years building Yuppiechef.com, South Africa’s leading e-commerce store, of hich he remains a non-executive director. He has started two new businesses recently – one in tech and the other in the social impact space - and plays an advisory role at the African School for Excellence. In 2014 Paul was chosen to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. He lives in Cape Town with his wife and his two children.

Daniel Jowell

Daniel Jowell is a barrister practising at Brick Court Chambers, London. A copy of his professional CV may be found here. He is the grandson of the late Helen Suzman.

Temba Nolutshungu

Temba Nolutshungu is a director of the Free Market Foundation, Cape Town, a former director of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Company and a trustee of several organisations. He has published widely on a variety of topics

Kalim Rajab

Kalim Rajab is a director of the New National Assurance Company, South Africa's largest empowered short-term insurer. He previously worked for De Beers in strategy and corporate finance. He was educated at the Universities of Cape Town and Oxford, the latter as an Oppenheimer Scholar.

Gary Ralfe (Chairman)

Gary Ralfe retired from active business life in 2006 after forty years of service firstly with Anglo American Corporation, and then with De Beers where he was Managing Director for eight years. In addition to the HSF he chairs the Board of Governors of Michaelhouse, the fund-raising arm of the Alexandra Education Committee, the fund- raising arm of Business Against Crime and the Beyond Foundation which does community work in rural areas.

Rosemary Smuts

Rosemary Smuts worked in education and community development in Mpumalanga in the 1970's-80's, extending these activities to the health sector in the Western Cape from 2000, after almost a decade with the British Embassy.

Richard Steyn (Deputy-Chairman)

Richard Steyn is currently a director of publishing company Editors Inc. He has been a director of corporate affairs and communications at Standard Bank, the editor-in-chief of The Star and the editor of The Witness in KwaZulu-Natal.

Phila Zulu

Phila Zulu is a banking and finance lawyer. He was educated at Rhodes University, obtaining a BCom and LLB degree. After a decade as a lawyer in practice, including a stint at the London office of White & Case LLP, Phila is currently the Legal Director and Company Secretary for a leading international health and fitness company, where he also serves on the Executive Committee, Risk Committee, and the Social and Ethics Committee.
