Become a Friend of the Helen Suzman Foundation

The Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) is making a difference.

The HSF promotes liberal constitutional democracy and the Rule of Law. We protect the rights enshrined in our country’s constitution and tackle issues of governance and accountability in the public arena. We also provide a platform for public engagement and dialogue and disseminate informed research.

More recently, we have intervened in the Covid 19 pandemic by making application to the Constitutional Court to ensure that the Executive and Parliament adhere to the separation of powers and continue to fulfil their respective mandates in these uncertain times.

Why you should become a Friend of the Helen Suzman Foundation

Democratic South Africa faces challenging times. There is much to celebrate in South Africa but much that gives rise to concern, frustration and even anger. Each of us can make a difference to ensure the development of South Africa.

The HSF invites you to support our important work, which has included:

  • Successfully intervening in various Courts, including the Constitutional Court, to protect the independence of both the Hawks and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
  • Legal action with regard to the Judicial Service Commission and most recently with the Magistrate's Commission in the appointment of judicial officers.
  • Successfully intervening in the High Court against the SABC in order to ensure freedom of speech and information, and quashing the attempt to bring charges against the Minister of Finance at the time, Pravin Gordhan.
  • Informed research into water resource management, governance, delivery and quality.
  • Informed research into the manufacture and distribution of pharmaceuticals in South Africa.
  • Important interventions relating to the National Health Insurance Bill, the Protection of State Information Bill, the South African Police Service Amendment Bill and the current debates around expropriation without compensation.
  • Convening Public Roundtables and publishing "Focus" the in-house journal of the HSF, and regular "Briefs" on topical issues.

The Foundation is not aligned to any political party

We work actively with a range of people and organisations to enhance the country’s emerging democracy.
