Why you should join us as a “Friend of the Foundation”
The Helen Suzman Foundation aims to promote constitutional democracy, rule of law and human rights in South Africa. In particular it seeks to undertake public interest litigation that safeguards the rights of vulnerable persons who are unable to utilise the ordinary political process in order to do so; to support public advocacy interventions and dialogue that promote public participation and deliberation and so result in informed, reasoned decision-making; and to end impunity for systematic criminal conduct destructive of a constitutional state — whether for state capture-related crimes or apartheid era atrocities. Some of our recent work includes:
- Intervening in public interest litigation, including our challenge to the termination of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit; our opposing former President Zuma’s appeal of the High Court judgment that held his medical parole to be granted unlawfully, and our continued support of Forum de Monitoria Do Orcamento in their litigation efforts to extradite former Mozambique Finance Minister, Manuel Chang to the USA to face prosecution for corruption.
- Public advocacy in the form of submissions to Parliament on matters related to strengthening key democratic institutions, electoral reform and defending the rights of vulnerable persons who are unable to utilise electoral processes to influence the will of Parliament.
- Campaigning to hold Bain & Company accountable for their misconduct at SARS.
- Monitoring of key events related to the Public Protector's Office, and the selection of judges by the Judicial Service Commission.
- Convening fora for public discussion in the form of our Roundtable Series, most recently on the potential for fiscally sustainable basic income support in SouthAfrica, and hosting lectures; and,
- Published research in the form of reports and “HSF Briefs” and our in-house journal “Focus.”
