Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) joins the global community in congratulating Judge Navi Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. As the first South African woman to receive this honour, Judge Pillay’s achievement recognises a distinguished career advancing human rights, international justice and accountability.
Judge Pillay’s contributions to international law and the advancement of human rights have brought great distinction to South Africa. Judge Pillay’s early life under Apartheid was marked by multiple occasions where she saw justice denied to many, including her own family, based on the colour of their skin. Despite this, she chose to pursue a life that exemplifies the principles that underpin our constitutional democracy and carry this into her work on the international level.
During her tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Judge Pillay demonstrated a steadfast commitment to justice and equality, including through her efforts to advance the abolition of the death penalty. Her work has consistently reflected the importance of protecting human dignity and upholding the rights of all people.
In the face of threats and opposition, Judge Pillay has also demonstrated exceptional courage and integrity in pursuing justice for victims of genocide and other mass atrocities. Her contribution to the development of international jurisprudence, including the recognition that rape can constitute an act of genocide, represents an important advancement in the pursuit of accountability for crimes against humanity.
HSF congratulates Judge Pillay on this well-deserved recognition. Her career stands as a testament to change that can be achieved through commitment to accountability, justice, and integrity.
