On 30 July, the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF), supported by the Open Society Foundation for South Africa and in association with the Gordon Institute of Business Science, hosted a Roundtable discussion on the Future of Our Cities. This Roundtable features Prof Adrian Saville, Dr Tanja Winkler, Mr Andile Skosana, and Prof Jean-Pierre de la Porte.

Helen Suzman Memorial Lecture 2013

18 November - The 2013 Helen Suzman Memorial Lecture was delivered by retired Constitutional Court Judge Zakeria Mohammed Yacoob and was entitled "The Constitution: A liberal democracy and patriotic criticism."

South African Police Service Amendment Bill Submission

A consequence of the Glenister judgment is the Government’s obligation to draft legislation to abide with the Court’s ruling. It did this by drafting the South African Police Services Amendment Bill. The HSF made a detailed submission to Government in response to the Bill. In summary, our analysis argues that the Bill does not meet the requirements of the Constitution and the Court, in particular that the Hawks (or its successor) cannot remain within the purview of the police.
